Director of Communications

What we need

Be a digital storyteller for TCDRS to educate on benefits, support sound decision making, promote services, motivate financial planning behavior, and help build community among membership. Drive TCDRS communications to the next level. Help set an effective communication strategy that meets organizational goals. Inspire team to generate new ideas and partner with business teams for greater insight to inform communications. Ensure content and visuals are high quality and engaging.

What you’ll do

Expand on customer journey opportunities and target audience needs

  • Establish team goals, develop strategies and communication plans.

  • Set clear vision and focus for the team to accomplish these goals.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of communication plans. Identify communication channels and key messages to keep audiences informed and connected.

  • Manage the creative development process for internal and external communications to provide writing support, content guidance, editing and art direction.

  • Provide communication consultation and assist with development and implementation of cross-organizational initiatives.

  • Assist with messaging development and PR-related support.

Keep team focused on highest value assignments

  • Manage resources, projects and incoming requests.

  • Set clear priorities and ensure adherence to deadlines. Adjust priorities as needed.

  • Use project management best practices to keep team running smoothly and organized. Look for opportunities to optimize process and work for efficiency.

  • Expand usage of communication-related tools to reach their fullest potential.

  • Ensure team is adequately cross trained on various tasks and tools for back-up support.

Create a team culture of idea sharing, innovation and collaboration

  • Encourage team to proactively learn more about our various audiences, services and operations to help with improving communications and experience.

  • Stay on top of communication trends and share learnings with the team.

  • Assist with team’s career aspirations and knowledge/skill development. Develop team through coaching, training and team-building activities.

  • Monitor performance and provide feedback that celebrates success and motivates improvement when needed.

Evaluate communication efforts and strive for improvement

  • Consolidate, interpret and report on communication analytics.

  • Use insight and data to better inform strategy and content creation.

  • Expand knowledge of various audiences through research, surveys and data.


What you should have


  • Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business or related field

  • 10+ years managing a communications or marketing team and budget

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofing skills, good at providing art direction

  • Strong managerial skills to coach, mentor and grow skill sets among team

  • Experience with interpreting insights and analytics, research initiatives

  • Experience with the following is a plus:

    • Salesforce Marketing Cloud (or other marketing automation tool)

    • Graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite

    • Website content management such as EpiServer

    • Project management software such as Wrike

    • Google Analytics

    • Photography and video editing experience


  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities, strong understanding of customer experience and customer journeys

  • High level of professionalism, ability to work well cross-functionally and independently, ability to present ideas in an organized, compelling and succinct way

  • Eye for design and visual storytelling, ability to convey our member’s stories through digital channels

  • Ability to manage projects with minimal assistance and within deadlines

  • Growth mindset, seeks opportunities to learn, accepts constructive feedback and enacts improvement

  • Creative and curious, interest in staying up to date on trends
