Where Are They Now: Margaret “Magee” Miller

We recently caught up with Margaret “Magee” Miller, who we first featured in Spring 2013 Connections. Learn how her retirement is going!

In 2013, we featured Margaret “Magee” Miller, a retired Harris County detention sergeant turned stand-up comedian, whose humor and resilience had audiences laughing while inspiring others.

Now 72, Magee still writes comedy, but she rarely performs. Instead, she has been channeling her energy into epoxy crafts. Starting with redoing her kitchen countertops, she now creates unique items like earrings and memorial keepsakes.

Magee recently redid her kitchen countertops.

Two examples of the epoxy keepsakes Magee has been creating.

A lifelong learner, Magee recently signed up for computer classes and continues to research and teach others, even offering self-defense tips to her neighbors. She also travels and stays physically active, recounting a trip to Europe last June where she walked 25,000 steps daily. Whenever her son reminds her she’s retired, she always replies, “I have plenty of time to rest when I’m dead.”

Magee remains grateful for her TCDRS retirement benefits, which she credits for giving her the freedom to pursue her passions. “I feel so blessed,” she says. Her advice for others? Keep active and stay creative. “Never stop learning. Staying busy is the key to staying young.”
