WE’RE HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL

Investment Strategy & Management

At TCDRS, we’re long-term investors. Considering that our members have an average of 18 years of service time and are retired for another 20 years, we have more than 30 years to save and invest for each member’s retirement benefits.

TCDRS invests for more than 305,000 Texans. Each is at a different stage in his or her career: just hired, mid-career, approaching retirement and retired. Instead of becoming more conservative over time — as individuals do as they approach and enter retirement — we can keep our portfolio optimally balanced to achieve our target return goal over the long term. In that sense, the TCDRS portfolio is “forever young”.

Our investment goal is to achieve an 8% return over the long term — that 30-year horizon — within an acceptable level of risk.

We attribute our success to three factors: people, process and performance.

RESPONSIBLE GUIDANCE

Our board of trustees and experienced investment staff, along with outside advisors, work together to make responsible decisions based on our investment policy.

Our process is vital to our success. We plan ahead, using forward-looking assumptions, perform extensive due diligence to hire outstanding investment managers, and then continuously evaluate our performance to ensure we meet our long-term goal.
