Goodbye Passwords, Hello Passkeys
Find out how passkeys can help protect your online accounts.
By Laura Mellett
You may have noticed some of your favorite websites and apps asking if you’d like to set up a passkey instead of using a password. But what exactly is a passkey, and why are companies moving toward this new technology?
What is a Passkey?
A passkey is a safer, simpler and password-free way to sign in. Instead of typing in a password, you use your device’s built-in security features — like Face ID, Touch ID or a device PIN — to verify your identity. Because of their enhanced security, major technology companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft are actively promoting and implementing passkeys. TCDRS will also be adding passkey technology this summer.
Why Are Apps and Websites Switching to Passkeys?
Passkeys are becoming the new standard for good reason:
-
They’re easy to use. No more passwords to remember or reset.
-
They’re more secure. Passkeys use your device's built in security, reducing the risk of phishing attacks or unauthorized access.
-
They’re more convenient. You can quickly sign into your accounts using your fingerprint, facial recognition or pin.
Passkeys can help you protect your online accounts, easily and securely. Just remember to keep your device safe and never share your passkey with anyone. As more apps and websites adopt this technology, you’ll spend less time worrying about passwords and more time enjoying a safer, simpler online experience.
