Over the course of your career, you’ve worked toward an important goal: a secure retirement.

You’ve worked hard to get to this point, and as retirement gets closer, it helps to make sure you’re ready—financially, practically and emotionally. The guide below can help you prepare for the transition into retirement.

  • Log in to your account at TCDRS.org and ensure we have the most updated contact information on file, if you haven’t already. This will make the retirement application process easier and faster. In your TCDRS.org account, you can access helpful planning tools, estimate your benefit and ultimately submit your application when you’re ready. If you’ve been using a work-related email address to access TCDRS up to this point, make sure to switch that out for a personal email before starting your application.

  • Figure out if you’re truly ready to retire. Retirement readiness isn’t just about timing — it’s emotional, financial and practical:

    • The Emotional Side: Talk to your loved ones. Do they think you’re ready? Consider how you will meet your social needs in retirement when work no longer provides that. Plan ways to structure and fill your time, whether that’s with hobbies, travel or gatherings with friends and family. How will you ensure you continue to feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment in life?

    • The Financial Side: Take some time to assess your financial wellness. Start by estimating your TCDRS benefit. Is it enough, or could waiting a few more years boost your benefit amount to a more comfortable level? Next, compare your expected retirement income with your expected expenses. Do you have enough to support your expected lifestyle in retirement and keep money set aside for emergencies? It may be helpful to discuss your finances with a professional.

    • The TCDRS Side: Consider scheduling a TCDRS Online Counseling session to make sure you understand all the details of how your retirement benefit will work. In your free, one-on-one appointment, a friendly representative can help you run benefit estimates, answer questions about the application process and more.

You’ll need to gather some information before starting your retirement application. You can check out our retirement checklist and browse through our FAQs if you need more direction.

And of course, we’re always here to help! You can call us at 800-823-7782 for over-the-phone support or schedule an Online Counseling appointment to fill out your application with the help of a representative. With the right support and a little planning, you can move into retirement with confidence.
